About Me:
For my 1st Uni assignment, we have been tasked with creating a manifesto, a case study of a current design practice, a constellation of ourselves, and an idea for our exhibition. Completing this assignment is an enjoyable process, and I feel like I get to know myself better.
The colours and fonts represent my innate love for bright pastel colours and my kid-at-heart personality. The publication represents my style when it comes to design. Music has been a part of my life since I started playing the violin at 7 years old. As such, I use music notes as the main graphics of the publication.
Design process:
- My manifesto uses the letter of my name that talks about the way I approach design and life in general. My name is written as music notes on the stave as well.
- I chose the K-pop group Seventeen as my case study due to their high involvement in their music as well as the album concept. As a Carat, I enjoyed the process of learning more about my favourite artist.
- The theme of Galaxy is the first thing that I thought of when working on my constellation. Using the four things that I love -- Films, Music, Games and Family -- as the planets, I use music notes as the rings that orbit around the planets.
- The exhibition idea is tied to the concept of journey and growth, as well as learning about ourselves.
About Them
After learning about ourselves, we are tasked to research a design company, the problems that may be present and solution ideas to solve the problem. After being a K-pop fan for a few years, I realised that K-pop fans can be exposed to a huge amount of hate comments and negativity in the fandoms, parasocial relationships, and toxic attitudes heavily marketed in the industry. Feeling fortunate to be considered an 'older' fan and aware of this negativity, I became concerned with how younger fans are exposed to this harmful content.
As such, I decided to target fans aged 13-18 years old and research parasocial relationships on K-pop idols, choosing Hybe Labels as the researched company, especially with their up-and-coming K-pop groups with huge fans in that age group. Through this assignment, I learnt a lot more about Hybe Labels, the K-pop industry and parasocial relationships.
About Experience:
For our final assignment, we are tasked with creating a physical exhibition prototype of our solution. Using K-pop, K-drama and Concerts from my Constellation, I link all three with the galaxy theme as the main guide and context of the exhibition.
The exhibition has three parts: K-entertainment (K-pop and K-drama), Parasocial relationships, and solution ideas. It is intended to have huge empty spaces to promote inclusivity. As K-entertainment comes from South Korea, the country (on the globe) faces visitors. The prototype is made with A4 300gsm paper.
My solution is a video streaming provider that provides K-pop content for fans while allowing fans to manage the amount of content they watch.
